Weatherstem seeks to collaborate with public/government entities in the Florida counties of Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, Bay, Gulf, Franklin, and Wakulla to submit a unified proposal to Florida Triumph to help fund a State of the Art weather monitoring and information system for the counties in scope.
Weatherstem has developed a solar-powered, cellular technology that combines weather instruments and cameras with a web, mobile, and social media platform used for situational awareness, scientific research, education, and community engagement.
In February 2017, an instance of this technology was successfully implemented at the St. George Island Bridge in partnership with Franklin County Emergency Management.
The system, free to the public, publishes its own website, Twitter feed, and Facebook page.
The system enables real-time weather alerts including lightning notifications and high wind alerts to be pushed out to cell phones.
The system also has hundreds of STEM Education Lessons aligned with Florida's Next Generation Sunshine State Standards to help build science literacy amongst Florida citizens.
Weatherstem seeks to establish more of these systems at strategically placed sites in the aforementioned counties in service to public health/safety, emergency management, education, and scientific research.
These systems would collectively be referred to as GulfSTEM.
Weatherstem has existing partnerships with each public school district in the counties in scope and is working with the Emergency Management Departments of Santa Rosa, Walton, Gulf, and Franklin Counties.
Weatherstem is a proud Florida company with its headquarters in Tallahassee with plans to open an operational office to support GulfSTEM in Panama City.
In 2010, an estimated 3.19 million barrels of oil leaked into the Gulf of Mexico following the explosion and sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig.
The oil spill had a devastating impact on the economy of a large portion of the US Gulf Coast including the coastline of the Florida panhandle.
Triumph Gulf Coast, Inc. was established by the Florida Legislature "to provide a long-term source of funding for efforts of economic recovery and enhancement in the Gulf Coast region".
